Pakistan Earthquake Relief
On October 8, 2005, a magnitude 7.6 quake rocked the mountains and valleys of northern Pakistan, killing more than 73,000 people and leaving hundreds of thousands homeless.
Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) responded by channeling resources through Church World Service, an agency with a long-standing program in Pakistan. MCC funds went for immediate emergency assistance - tents, blankets, food, medical care, water and sanitation. Survivors are being helped to return home and rebuild their lives. Among other involvements, MCC is supporting psychosocial activities for those who remain traumatized.
In addition, MCC is assisting 12 extended families in Jared, an earthquake-devastated village near Pakistan-controlled Kashmir. Through Ten Thousand Villages and their artisan group Bunyaad, MCC is supporting efforts to construct earthquake-resistant houses and identify job opportunities for the more than 100 members of these families.
Below you will find more detailed information on the efforts of Bunyaad, along with Ten Thousand Villages and MCC.
