Storytime on the Carpet in June
June 8 @ 11:00 am – 11:45 am
Storytime is a FREE activity for Preschool and Elementary school age children. Once a month we put the rugs on the floor to lounge on while listening to a storybook.
We would love to have you and your children join us on our durable rugs. Reading and a craft (with glue and all sorts of fun messy things) is all done in the rug room near (and even on) the rugs.
On Our Way to Oyster Bay: Mother Jones and Her March for Children’s Rights
Written by Monica Kulling and illustrated by Felicita Sala
Though eight-year-old Aidan and his friend Gussie want to go to school, like many other children in 1903, they work twelve hours, six days a week, at a cotton mill in Pennsylvania instead. So when the mill-workers decide to go on strike, the two friends join the picket line. Maybe now life will change for them.
But when a famous labor reformer named Mother Jones comes to hear of the mill-workers’ demands, she tells them they need to do more than just strike. Troubled by all she had seen, Mother Jones wanted to end child labor. But what could she do? Why, organize a children’s march and bring the message right to President Theodore Roosevelt at his summer home in Oyster Bay, of course!
The reading will be followed by a craft activity. Storytime participants will also receive a special coupon for the Café following the day’s storytime. RSVP below to reserve one of 25 spots on the rug and at the crafts table.
